The music of Quincy Jones spans six decades. That said, he has earned his reputation as a renaissance man of American music. Jones has distinguished himself as a bandleader, a solo artist, a sideman, a songwriter, a producer, an arranger, a film composer, and a record label executive, and outside of music, he’s also written books, produced major motion pictures, and helped create television series.

Conducted in 1999 with limited time, Quincy Jones spoke to me about his childhood; the relationship of gun violence and drugs in this country; his new release “From Q with Love,” a compilation CD of his hits; several projects that are either still being considered or will never see the light of day; his thoughts, admiration, and perspective of a pimp; and his company QWEST Broadcasting. Quincy had a cold at the time, and is accompanied by Catera, one of his many protégés.
