Now as happy as I am to see a new film coming from Ang Lee, does it have to be in 3-D? When I saw the face of Irfan Khan in the border on Facebook I was intrigued. Recognizing him from this past season of HBO’s “In Treatment,” reading the article, I realized I loved his performance in “Slumdog Millionaire.” My favorite delivery from Khan however, is his tour de force in Nair’s “The Namesake.”

Once linked to an article on the word & film website, it was like a pin to a balloon, as I was deflated when I read Lee’s new film was going to be in 3-D. WTF!!! Whhhhyyyy… would an artist of his talent succumb to the parlor tricks of 3-D? Oh wait, remember the blue screen monstrosity that was “The Hulk,”? — which is why he should think twice about going down this road. It’s probably the studio though. According to movie & film, it’s been nearly a decade since Yann Martel’s Prize-winning book “Life of Pi” began its long courtship with Hollywood, during which such upper-caste filmmakers as M. Night ShyamalanJean-Pierre Jeunet, and Alfonso Cuaron flirted heavily with the project. Now, the long-delayed adaptation finally seems to be headed toward consummation with director Ang Lee, who just cast two pivotal roles — Gerard Depardieu as the chef and Irfan Khan as the grown-up version of the title character who, as a young boy, spends 227 days stranded on a boat in the middle of the Pacific with a Bengal tiger.

Ang Lee

100 years ago 3-D was the BOMB! Then it went away, then it appeared every so often and it was a special treat. NOW it’s freakin’ overkill! Jesus, Mary & Joseph, every time you turn around there’s another movie in 3-D. Ang Lee is the Director of the films “Eat Drink Man Woman,” “The Ice Storm,” “Sense and Sensibility,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” to name a few. He don’t need 3-D.

At the same time in his defense, given certain aspects of the story line, it could be cool – BUT that doesn’t dismiss the fact that there’s WAY TOO MANY movies coming out in 3-D these days. GIVE IT A REST – HELLO HOLLYWOOD!!!! Can we go back to making 3-D movies a special event…?!?!%$&#/*$!!!  I guess it won’t be for awhile yet, here’s 37 upcoming releases… in 3-D: Cabin In the Woods, Sanctum, Gnomeo and Juliet, Drive Angry, Justin Beiber: Never Say Never, Mars Needs Moms, Thor, Priest, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Kung Fu Panda 2, Green Lantern, Cars 2, Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, Captain America, The Smurfs, Conan the Barbarian, Fright Night, Spy Kids 4, Final Destination 5, Piranha 3DD, Dolphin Tale, The Three Musketeers, Contagion, Puss in Boots, Immortals, Happy Feet 2, Arthur Christmas, Flanimals, Hugo Cabret, Sherlock Holmes 2, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, The Adventures of Tin-Tin, Sucker Punch, Cowboys and Aliens, Underworld 4 and Spider-Man 4.
