Dave Chapelle wraps a run of shows in Atlanta tomorrow night. The brilliant sketch comedian began his run of performances on Thursday at ATL’s Tabernacle concert hall, which sold out almost immediately, prompting LIVE Nation to add more shows. Chapelle’s closing show marks seven sold out sets, that included opening night; and early and late shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday… I smell a DVD. Eight shows evolving from one initial scheduled show, THAT’S FUNKY!!!
Who’s Hot in Hip-Hop? Where’s Real Hip-Hop At? Questions those seeking always hear and will pose from time to time. It’s ALIVE and doing just fine. While there’s only some that appeals to me, ALL of it never did. There’s “rappers” out there that want to dis MCs for combining singing with rap, when rap is what R&B is today. I enjoy both, those that give it to me straight and those that flow with a melody.
Keeping It Real and Making It Funky…June is Black Music Month. Celebrate the best clubs of Harlem’s past and the great artists that performed in them with the Museum Of UnCut Funk.
My writings are mostly fluff, what I consider controversial when I want to be. The works of Michael Hastings and Edward Snowden is serious stuff. My hats off to those that keep us, the American public, informed about what we have a right to know about. My condolences to the friends and family of Michael Hastings, as I can not imagine their torment during this time.
There’s not a lot I can say that the video doesn’t do already. I just wanted to post it here at Funkalicious so as many people as possible could encounter this new music, and enable visitors to The Museum of UnCut Funk the opportunity to experience the incredible band called Unlocking The Truth. I live in the same New York borough as they do, but it was a post on a friend’s Facebook page from Alaska that brought them to my attention.
One of the best Christmas presents I have ever received is a turntable. In fact, every turntable I’ve ever owned, was a Christmas present. The first one was from my mom. It was a Hi-Fi Stereo component, with adjusting speeds for 33 LPs; 78s; and 45s. The gift was accompanied by the first album I ever owned too — “Imagination” from Gladys Knight and the Pips! A very popular LP at the time, it featured the songs “Midnight Train to Georgia”, “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me” and “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination,” a song that to this day, still inspires me.
Here is a excerpt from the letter written by Culinary Historian, Food Writer and Living History Interpreter Michael W. Twitty to Paula Dean.
BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL! That used to be a popular phrase. One that still holds true for me, it doesn’t for a multitude of people… from the land where the black man — the first man — began. Bill Duke and D. Channsin Berry are the directors of “Dark Girls.” Airing on OWN, it premiered last night, I don’t see any future air dates — but you can get all the details and see portions of the film on it’s official site: http://officialdarkgirlsmovie.com
LeA Robinson celebrated her 20th birthday last night with a live performance and the debut of her video for the smash single “Higher.” Dressed in a form fitting white jumpsuit, Robinson sang her songs “Don’t Mess with My Love,” “Flowers and Candy,” and “Higher”, at the event sponsored by RHM Management and Legacy House Entertainment (LHE). We had a chat with LeA about her new music — here’s what she shared about her forthcoming CD “808’s & Leggings.”
Wow! If Serena Williams isn’t winning a tennis tournament, she’s popping up on magazine covers or in an (almost) ad for a new video game. The FUNK of Serena can’t be stopped. The winner of The French Open for the second time, she graces the cover of Essence magazine for the July issue.
THIS IS AN “OPEN LETTER” TO MY FAVORITE HIP-HOP PRODUCER DR. DRE. WARNING: This Blog May Contain Language Not Suitable for Small Children and Is Only for Those Who Really Love the Music of Dr. Dre. It’s not for the meek or easily offended at the rant of a hip-hop advocate and enthusiast. That said, it’s simply metaphysically time for new music from Dre. If you agree with me, I need you to prove it, I need you to tweet, share, e-mail, and get on the phone so this message goes viral. If you’re not down with that, stop here, this blog’s not for you.
The Last Frontier is legalizing weed! The state is already among the 13 states in the union where marijuana is decriminalized. Marijuana is decriminalized, legal medicinally (see here: http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=000881), or both — in 25 of America’s United States. Here’s a map with the break down from http://www.theweedblog.com
I found myself with a touch of insomnia last night, so I turned on the tube and began surfing until I felt sleepy. I land on “Tru-TV” and see flashing lights from police cars. “What’s this? Did TruTV pick up ‘Cops’”? I soon realize that’s not the case. It’s a show called “Bait Car.”
Spike Lee and Spike Jonze both have new films in theaters this fall. Two of today’s most innovative directors, they both have a distinctive style that sets them apart from men behind the camera of yesteryear. In addition to displaying aspects of the human condition, Jonze and Lee get to deliver it in ways Hollywood only, and never dreamed of. Before “Being John Malcovich” was released, there had never been a film quite like it. Once Lee made his way into the fray, more black people began working in the industry of film than ever before.
There’s a gross misinterpretation continually growing that texting is talking… IT’S NOT!!! What it is, is a method for millions of people not to talk, often because they don’t want a human exchange. It’s a means of expression that can’t be immediately challenged, disputed or debated. It’s a way of communication that many use because they think they’re slick, when in reality THOSE people are socially inept or illiterate. You ain’t foolin’ nobody.
Most people who know me know that I love to cook. But the one thing I have trouble making is Mac and Cheese…don’t know why??? So to get some inspiration I tried S’MAC in New York City.
If you didn’t know that Queens of the Stone Age was one of the DOPEST ROCK Bands to come to fruition in the last 20 years, now you know. This is not so much a blog, but more of a heads up! QOTSA are back with this one — Feeling It!!! In search of new music two days ago, I came across this Billboard article and review.
I had the pleasure of meeting Soyinka at this year’s ECBACC event and I invited her to join our Aesthetic Grooves family. I hope you enjoy reading about Soyinka and support her work.
Holy Summer Blockbusters! Universal’s “The Purge” will lead the box office this weekend for raking in the dough. The film studio is riding high right now, as “Fast & Furious 6” topped the box office last week, making it number-one two weeks in a row! I just knew “After Earth” would take the top spot, since ‘Furious’ was released for Memorial Day Weekend… WRONG!
You know there are still some folks out there who do not know about the evil that is Monsanto. The corporate entity is probably exposed best in the film “Food Inc.” They give people a multitude of reasons why the supermarkets to shop at are Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and your local farmer’s market. Below is a very modest and condensed list of some of the top things EVERYONE should know and hate about Monsanto. I snagged it from http://www.wewititla.com
