This year for the best of FUNKALICIOUS list, I decided to go with the best CDs I’ve heard, with black and white covers. Pinterest has an article citing 228, of the best black and white album covers, of all time. I chose these four works of art, because liken to the brilliance of B&W, cover art has always intrigued me about a record, encouraging me to listen to the music.
“Poetry in Motion” is SOJA’s 8th and latest studio release. The band’s last CD was their first live album, which got critical acclaim, and was Grammy nominated. This marked the 2nd nomination for the group. Their first was for the CD “Amid the Noise and Haste.”
It’s quite a diverse bunch, but they’re all worth a watch. “Jeff Lynne’s ELO: Wembley or Bust,” “Joan Jett: Bad Reputation,” and “Elvis Presley: The Searcher” are three musical documentaries that capture the essence of the artists featured in each of them.
How fitting of Angelique Kidjo, to do a re-imagining of the classic Talking Heads smash album, “Remain In Light.” I actually got to meet Talking Heads founder David Byrne, during my years at the New York Public Library, when he did a lecture there discussing ‘Music and Copyright in the Digital Era.’
The Grammy Award wining team that gave us Joss Stone’s “Soul Sessions,” has stepped back into the fray, with Elise LeGrow. Her debut album “Playing CHESS,” produced by Steve Greenberg, Mike Mangini and Betty Wright, features 12 hits from the vintage label.
Four-Time Grammy Award Winner, Lenny Kravitz’s New Album “Raise Vibration,” is in stores and available online now. Steeped in Rock-n-Soul, from his humble beginnings, Lenny’s music has always been an alternative. He’s an ARTIST! Staying true to himself has enabled him to sustain the past 29 years. Next year marks 30, since Kravitz’s first release, through Virgin records.
Camila Cabello, Bebe Rexha and Dua Lipa, are just a few female talents that had breakthrough success, over the past year. I speak of these three in particular, because whenever I heard their music prior to knowing who they were, I was like I need to know these artists! A lot like in the realm of Halsey and SZA last year.
There’s not a lot I can say about “The Queen of Soul,” that a myriad of writers and multiple media outlets, have not already professed. Services for the girl that began singing in her father C. L. Franklin’s church, who amazingly managed to kick the ass of “pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type” (according to her publicist) for the past several years, will take place at 10 a.m. (EDT) this Friday in Detroit. She was 76.
I BELIEVE THESE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE – THEY’VE BEEN TAUGHT WELL AND ARE LEADING THE WAY. Love, support and congratulations, to ALL that marched and supported the children today. I salute them for standing up, using their voice and being aware. I salute them because they’re marching for my daughter.
Remember when we were younger and simply enjoyed the show! In hindsight, I actually realize dynamics of the film(s) affected me, although I wasn’t thoroughly conscience of it at the time. The broadcast premiere of “West Side Story” was an event! I can still recall the excitement in my house, of it airing for the first time, over the course of two nights.
In celebration of Black History Month I’m paying tribute to 28 contemporary history makers. These people have inspired me throughout my life, as well as today, and are making a positive impact on our world.
Gary Harris was a self-proclaimed “Record Man.” One who worked in radio, at the beginning and the end of his illustrious life and career, he touched the lives of many – mine was one.
I just had to drop this link as an earmark in time…
2017 was a good year for music. Although I’m sure there’s more to hear, what I got in, was all good! What I’m really happy about, is the essence of FUNK, in so much of what I liked.
Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” featuring Daddy Yankee dropped at the top of the year. The phrase “It was a very good year” certainly applies for the tune, as it’s the most viewed video of all time on YouTube, with nearly 4.5 billion hits. Now it’s nominated for three Grammy Awards.
Daniel Caesar is nominated for Best R&B Album at next year’s Grammy ceremony. One of several R&B talents that have emerged out of Canada, Caesar is an independent artist, in this streaming age of music. Liken to fellow Canadians, Justin Beiber and The Weeknd, his fan base spawned from the Internet.
Racism is alive and casting lots of un-wellness among the people of our nation. While millions find it hard to believe… “Stay Woke,” as it’s when one is blind that ye suffers most. Through it all – racism then and now – multi-millions come together through music…
The Weeknd, DJ Khaled, Kendrick Lamar, French Montana and Future are among the biggest names in music today. The backgrounds of these five men are as diverse, as various genres of music, yet they’re all ‘King(s) of Pop’ music and culture.
A Tribe Called Quest and Aminé dropped my two favorite albums in hip-hop this year! Sure I’m feeling Jay-Z’s “4:44,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Damn,” and Rhapsody’s “Laila’s Wisdom,” however when reaching for rap to listen to…
“Life is full of ups and downs… the carousels of love. Good times, bad times, smiles and frowns… Don’t give up on me…,” are words uttered by Damian Marley on his latest release “Stony Hill.” His 6th album, his brother Stephen joins him, on the songs “Medication,” “Grown & Sexy,” and “Perfect Picture.”
