LeA Robinson celebrated her 20th birthday last night with a live performance and the debut of her video for the smash single “Higher.” Dressed in a form fitting white jumpsuit, Robinson sang her songs “Don’t Mess with My Love,” “Flowers and Candy,” and “Higher”, at the event sponsored by RHM Management and Legacy House Entertainment. We had a chat with LeA about her new music — here’s what she shared about her forthcoming CD “808′s & Leggings.”
Wow! If Serena Williams isn’t winning a tennis tournament, she’s popping up on magazine covers or in an (almost) ad for a new video game. The FUNK of Serena can’t be stopped. The winner of The French Open for the second time, she graces the cover of Essence magazine for the July issue.
THIS IS AN “OPEN LETTER” TO MY FAVORITE HIP-HOP PRODUCER DR. DRE. WARNING: This Blog May Contain Language Not Suitable for Small Children and Is Only for Those Who Really Love the Music of Dr. Dre. It’s not for the meek or easily offended at the rant of a hip-hop advocate and enthusiast. That said, it’s simply metaphysically time for new music from Dre. If you agree with me, I need you to prove it, I need you to tweet, share, e-mail, and get on the phone so this message goes viral. If you’re not down with that, stop here, this blog’s not for you.
The Last Frontier is legalizing weed! The state is already among the 13 states in the union where marijuana is decriminalized. Marijuana is decriminalized, legal medicinally (see here: http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=000881), or both — in 25 of America’s United States. Here’s a map with the break down from http://www.theweedblog.com
I found myself with a touch of insomnia last night, so I turned on the tube and began surfing until I felt sleepy. I land on “Tru-TV” and see flashing lights from police cars. “What’s this? Did TruTV pick up ‘Cops’”? I soon realize that’s not the case. It’s a show called “Bait Car.”
Spike Lee and Spike Jonze both have new films in theaters this fall. Two of today’s most innovative directors, they both have a distinctive style that sets them apart from men behind the camera of yesteryear. In addition to displaying aspects of the human condition, Jonze and Lee get to deliver it in ways Hollywood only, and never dreamed of. Before “Being John Malcovich” was released, there had never been a film quite like it. Once Lee made his way into the fray, more black people began working in the industry of film than ever before.
There’s a gross misinterpretation continually growing that texting is talking… IT’S NOT!!! What it is, is a method for millions of people not to talk, often because they don’t want a human exchange. It’s a means of expression that can’t be immediately challenged, disputed or debated. It’s a way of communication that many use because they think they’re slick, when in reality THOSE people are socially inept or illiterate. You ain’t foolin’ nobody.
If you didn’t know that Queens of the Stone Age was one of the DOPEST ROCK Bands to come to fruition in the last 20 years, now you know. This is not so much a blog, but more of a heads up! QOTSA are back with this one — Feeling It!!! In search of new music two days ago, I came across this Billboard article and review.
Holy Summer Blockbusters! Universal’s “The Purge” will lead the box office this weekend for raking in the dough. The film studio is riding high right now, as “Fast & Furious 6″ topped the box office last week, making it number-one two weeks in a row! I just knew “After Earth” would take the top spot, since ‘Furious’ was released for Memorial Day Weekend… WRONG!
You know there are still some folks out there who do not know about the evil that is Monsanto. The corporate entity is probably exposed best in the film “Food Inc.” They give people a multitude of reasons why the supermarkets to shop at are Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and your local farmer’s market. Below is a very modest and condensed list of some of the top things EVERYONE should know and hate about Monsanto. I snagged it from http://www.wewititla.com
The FUNKIEST moment is being there, in the moment, not recording it. I watched Oprah Winfrey’s address to Harvard University online last night. One being able to have the opportunity to hear a person of her caliber, success and expertise in a private setting speak, is rare. When moments like this occur, you should really be in tune and focused, not recording it.
The news is out, this year’s 37th annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks will light up the sky over the Hudson River. An event that usually takes place on the East side of NYC these days, it takes place on the West side like every five years.
Oscar Award winning actor, producer and director Forest Whitaker has several projects on deck right now. Soon to be seen as the lead in Lee Daniels’ “The Butler” opposite Oprah Winfrey, he has current and upcoming roles in six other films.
Let’s try this again… some where along the course of blogging I made an error, as the blog I anticipated would hold the first position on the eighth page of the Funkalicious Blog, ended up as the fourth one? I don’t know, but it gives me an excuse to talk about FUNKY #9. How can a number be FUNKY you may be thinking…
If and when you’re in L.A. and need a dose of some FUNK, check out The Mason Affair. These guys have been compared to the likes of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Aloe Blacc, Ozomatli, Parliament/Funkadelic and Galactic. For me they’re a great fusion band of FUNK and Jazz, bringing flavor on their songs “All Night”, “I Can Tell You” and “Eyes On Fire.”
“If I can, make it there, I’ll make it, Anywhere…” Truer words were never spoken of all the true words there are. The truth of that statement still exist, but THAT “New York, New York” is long gone. As this life has afforded me nearly half a century, ‘these vagabond shoes are longing to stray’, not so much ‘through the very heart of it’, but to continue my journey around the country and the world.
Over the years I’ve heard many words that have impressed, inspired and stuck with me. A couple I remember hearing fondly from my mother Ronna Waller and always recycle are “Better safe than sorry” and “Be careful what you wish for.” The first time I heard the phrase “People in hell want ice water - that don’t mean they get it,” was a brilliantly delivered line from Jessica Lange as Patsy Cline in the movie “Sweet Dreams.” Here’s another bakers dozen…
How we live, as well as history, shows that we as a people have made tremendous strides. What’s incredible and extremely unfortunate, is that with all our “progress”, so many things are still the same. I was watching Bill Moyer on PBS, and he sited an excerpt of a speech by Martin Luther King. It’s uncanny how we’ve moved forward, but not nearly enough, and in some instances not at all.
“Iron Man 3″ was number-one at the box office after the weekend results were all totaled. According to boxofficemojo.com it took in an estimated $175.3 million dollars. This ranks it the second all-time highest grossing movie opening behind last year’s “The Avengers”, which took in $207.4 million. The movie is also doing well overseas, and is on its way to earning well over $1 billion worldwide.
The end of stigmas in sports overall would be a tremendous human achievement. The reality of that actually occurring is very slim, but the courage that NBA B-Ball player Jason Collins has displayed is unprecedented. As a result he got unprecedented support from fellow NBA players and President Barack Obama — our hats here at The Museum of UnCut Funk come off to him. There’s not even much I can say, here’s an excerpt of the interview from the source that broke the story, Sports Illustrated…
