WHAT THE FUNK! My Current State of Mind

WHAT THE FUNK! My Current State of Mind

Above all, I’m grateful for my blessings, I can truly say that.  This coward that took the lives of so many innocent people in Orlando should not be called a terrorist.  It was a horrific occurrence, and while I do consider acts of violence terrorist acts, this weakling for lack of better description isn’t worthy.

HIP-HOP (Hooray) for HOLLYWOOD – RZA & Azealia Do “Coco”

HIP-HOP (Hooray) for HOLLYWOOD – RZA & Azealia Do “Coco”

Back in the day, “Krush Groove”, was the quintessential hip-hop flick.  It was released through Warner Brothers studios in 1985, one year after the success of Prince’s “Purple Rain”, and starred his then protégé and companion Sheila E.  Although rap and the culture of hip-hop, are rooted in advocating anti-establishment values and not “selling out”, ever since “Boyz N’ the Hood”, it’s been all about cashing in.

40 FUNKY YEARS OF “LIVING FOR THE CITY”

40 FUNKY YEARS OF “LIVING FOR THE CITY”

Stevie Wonder’s “Innervisions” album is forty years old today!  What’s crazy is I was just listening to it no more than four weeks ago, thinking how relevant Stevie’s lyrics still are, but I put it on for the music.  It was “Living for the City” that I wanted to hear in particular, but “Innervisions” is one of those records you can put on and just press play, still today.  Back in the day when it was released, we had to put the needle on the record, as CD was something, on the way.

FOREVER FUNKED UP RE(A)D MESSAGES OF FEAR, DEATH, SEX & DEFEAT

FOREVER FUNKED UP RE(A)D MESSAGES OF FEAR, DEATH, SEX & DEFEAT

OR The Power of Red & Black in Advertising.  The “Temptation” ad from my previous blog inspired this.  Since the beginning of advertising the “creative mind” has literally banked on fear and nothing has changed.  The all ever popular soap commercials of radio, that led to the soap commercials for soap operas on TV, are steeped in fear.  Yes of course we need and use soap for cleaning things we use daily and our personal hygiene, however it’s the way the message is shaped.

JACK WHITE IS FUNKDAFIED!

JACK WHITE IS FUNKDAFIED!

There was lots of talk about Lindsay Lohan making her “comeback” on Saturday Night Live this weekend. Purple Passion!

Purple Passion!

I don’t believe anyone would dispute the unique FUNK stylings of Prince when it comes to his music. Simply a master musician, he’s been categorized as a “Pop / Rock” artist for the most part. His first release, “For You,” was a refreshing contribution to music. It featured songs like “Soft and Wet” and “Crazy You,” which offered a kind of latent hippie sort of vibe. It was the FUNKY rhythm of his first hit, “I Wanna Be Your Lover” from his second self-titled album, that perked up the ears of the R&B community.

Funky Christmas Part 2 – The Beatles To Alicia Keys

Funky Christmas Part 2 – The Beatles To Alicia Keys

This Christmas I was very fortunate to get the gift of music. Two of my favorite people in the world bestowed treasures upon me that I’ll cherish for years to come. On Christmas Eve, as I did the last of the trimming to the tree, I opened my gift from Chantalle. It was a Beatles Christmas tree ornament. A scenic piece of pottery, the “Fab Four” are presented complete with instruments, as if they’re playing music from their early days of fame.
