The handwritings been on the wall for some time now. Once the advent of legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes came into existence, the evolution of decriminalization and recreational use, was on its way – now it’s arrived.
On Monday, July 7th, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the Compassionate Care Act. This action made the state of New York the 23rd in the union to legalize medicinal marijuana. Although the stamp of approval is restricted to non-smokable forms via pills, oils, or vapors, the legalization of cannabis across America’s 50 states continues.
“If I can, make it there, I’ll make it, Anywhere…” Truer words were never spoken of all the true words there are. The truth of that statement still exist, but THAT “New York, New York” is long gone. As this life has afforded me nearly half a century, ‘these vagabond shoes are longing to stray’, not so much ‘through the very heart of it’, but to continue my journey around the country and the world.
Steve McQueen’s most recent work of art was a blue vision in Amsterdam’s largest public park, the Vondelpark. For two weeks, from March 7–25, all 275 streetlamps that usually use a warm white light were replaced with a subdued blue toned light. McQueen’s objective with “Blues Before Sunrise” was to stimulate the senses via an aspect of cinema.
This video is my short film that was featured in two festivals in 2007 in New York, NY and on the isle of Martha’s Vineyard, MA. It discusses cannabis culture in Amsterdam, Holland and makes the distinction between legalization and decrminalization of marijuana. Decriminalization is the abolition of criminal penalties in relation to certain acts, perhaps retroactively, though perhaps regulated permits or fines might still apply.
