It’s quite a diverse bunch, but they’re all worth a watch. “Jeff Lynne’s ELO: Wembley or Bust,” “Joan Jett: Bad Reputation,” and “Elvis Presley: The Searcher” are three musical documentaries that capture the essence of the artists featured in each of them.
There’s not a lot I can say about “The Queen of Soul,” that a myriad of writers and multiple media outlets, have not already professed. Services for the girl that began singing in her father C. L. Franklin’s church, who amazingly managed to kick the ass of “pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type” (according to her publicist) for the past several years, will take place at 10 a.m. (EDT) this Friday in Detroit. She was 76.
Living 57 years is great, but if he were still here, he’d be 58. The ‘Controversy’ concerning his estate is a disgrace. People with a ‘Dirty Mind’, making claims to what he created, ‘Must Be Something in the Water They Drink.’
80 Empire a.k.a. The Rezza Brothers and Andrea Godin are all from Canada, but their favorite music, was made in the lower half of North America. The production duo and rising pop star got together and revamped Godin’s song “Falling.”
It’s been a month yet it’s still very much in the forefront of my mind. Although he was not an actual friend, he was a very dear companion to me through his music, as he was to millions. My last entry on him was merely a mention of his latest release “Hit-N-Run: Phase 2.”
“The Color Purple” opens on Broadway tomorrow night! Starring Jennifer Hudson as “Shug Avery,” the all around female entertainer performed a segment of the show, on “The Late Show” after taking the couch with Stephen Colbert on Monday night.

On the day after Eric Holder announces the results of the Federal Investigation on Ferguson… Shonda Rhimes incorporates the essence of current events on “Scandal,” presenting the horror of the Michael Brown case and addressing the issue of “illegal immigrants”, via “Olivia Pope” ala Kerry Washington.
There was a lot of FUNKY Music this year! Not limited to the genre of FUNK, several icons and legends in music released new albums, as well as some of music’s newer FUNKY artists. Here’s the FUNKALICIOUS list for 2014…
What’s happening folks, it’s S.D., your favorite OG (older gent) here! Reflecting on some of my favorite musical artists of the 70’s (1970-1979). It was during these times that I personally enjoyed the natural development and maturation of some already known R&B acts. In addition to being introduced to new musicians from the “DISCO” era.
Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand and Smokey Robinson all have new music out. Streisand and Robinson’s CDs are duet projects, and Franklin’s release is an album of covers, including classics from Etta James to Adele.

During the tenure of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama I can definitely say there has been a whole lot more SOUL up in the people’s house…
I received an image of Luis’ work that was sent to me via facebook. I have never seen graphic design quite like this before. Being such a huge fan of 1970’s Black culture, Luis’ creations blew me away. His designs are very Afrocentric, which of course is appealing to me. His intricate patterns of iconic figures like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Prince and Marvin Gaye are so beautiful that they speak for themselves. I think you are going to like his work.
The Queen of Soul is currently working with Taylor Hackford, the producer of Ray, on a biopic of her life.
It’s official, Andre 3000 of OutKast, real name Andre Benjamin has been cast to portray Jimi Hendrix in the biopic “All Is By My Side.” Benjamin’s name was mentioned a few years ago about taking on the role, but rumors died after about a month or so. “All Is By My Side” will be set in the 1960s just before the release of Jimi’s debut album “Are You Experienced.”
Aretha Franklin celebrated her 70th birthday yesterday! DAMN!!! God bless her, she is truly anointed – YES! Twas not long ago that she was very ill, and yet she’s still with us, as we continue to mourn the passing of her god-daughter Whitney Houston. Houston’s mom Cissy, sang back-up for Franklin, Mahalia Jackson and Elvis Presley, in addition to forging a solo career. It’s sad and unfortunate when a parent has to bury a child, I sympathize with Ms. Houston for her loss. As it’s too often it seems that our stars on earth continually fall from the sky, from grace or off the face of the planet…

My mouth literally gaped open just now when I read the headline that television icon Don Cornelius was dead. It then opened wider when I read that he had shot himself!!! “Soul Train” hit the air in 1970 in Chicago, going national in 1971, I was eight. It was uplifting programming, seeing people of color dancing and enjoying themselves while some of the greatest talent in music performed.
