insideplaya LOVES D’Angelo

Earlier this year, I posted portions of an article originally published ‎through the blog insideplaya, about D’Angelo.  A tough love piece, it rendered facts about the business of the music industry, the legacy of FUNK, and Michael “D’Angelo” Archer’s career.

Funk Ad(d)s Up 2 Do$$ars – Part VI: GAP Band vs. Commodores

Funk Ad(d)s Up 2 Do$$ars – Part VI: GAP Band vs. Commodores

Charlie Wilson is without a doubt one of the best return to music stories in R&B.  I won’t call it a comeback, cause he’s been here for years, with one of the FUNKIEST bands in the ‘80s – The GAP Band.  Lionel Richie was down with the Commodores before his solo success, and today they both have songs, backing major brands.

FOUR SEASONS OF FUNK – JAMES, RICK, GEORGE & BOOTSY

FOUR SEASONS OF FUNK – JAMES, RICK, GEORGE & BOOTSY

James Brown’s biopic “Get On Up” hits theaters today.  In the spirit of FUNK, I wanted to share an interview I did with him for those who might want to hear the actual voice, of “The Godfather of Soul.”  Then I figured, why not include three other masters, of the FUNK genre.  Having the honor to speak with these men were not only a highlight of my career in music, but in life, as they provided the soundtrack to it (click on photo above for full view).

FUNK Ad(d)s Up 2 $ – Part 5 / Exploiting “The King of Pop”

Five years ago at the inception of this Funkalicious blog, I talked about the value and use of FUNK in advertising.  My intent was to show how influential FUNK still is today, although the epitome of the essence of FUNK, was 40 years ago.

An Open Letter to D’Angelo – insideplaya

An Open Letter to D’Angelo – insideplaya

Recently my friend Gary Harris, who happens to be a former EMI A&R exec, has been criticized and bashed by several fans and other outlets on the web.  One who introduced me to the music of D’Angelo back in 1992 prior to it’s release while I was at WBLS, he wrote an open letter to the artist, expressing a personal point of view.

Music Favorites (so far) for 2014

Music Favorites (so far) for 2014

The year is half-way over as summer is upon us.  The first five months flew by to me, but since 2012, my thinking has been that 2013 & 14 are merely set-up and transitional for 2015.  I don’t even know why I’ve thought that way, “it’s just a feeling I’ve got.”  I personally moved to Boston this year and graduated from college last year, so perhaps it was just the transitions of my life that I foresaw.

“GET ON UP” – The James Brown Movie

Chadwick Boseman, the star of the movie “42” based on the life of Jackie Robinson, has taken on the role of James Brown for the biopic “Get On Up.”  The film chronicles Brown’s life from poverty to his rise to mega success, as he became one of the most influential musicians in history.  World renown as “The Godfather of Soul”, Brown is unequivocally “The Pioneer of FUNK.”

THE FUNKY R&B DUO: Toni Braxton & Babyface

THE FUNKY R&B DUO: Toni Braxton & Babyface

I never heard an R&B duet that I didn’t like.  Over the years there have been hundreds of performances, but the R&B duo as a musical entity, has been limited.  Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton are the male and female who have done it right most recently with the song “So In Love,” from Scott’s CD “The Light of the Sun.”  This was a track that no true program director in the genre of Urban music could deny — they did the damn thing.

Funkalicious Vinyl Funk — LOVE & Turntables

Funkalicious Vinyl Funk — LOVE & Turntables

One of the best Christmas presents I have ever received is a turntable.  In fact, every turntable I’ve ever owned, was a Christmas present.  The first one was from my mom.  It was a Hi-Fi Stereo component, with adjusting speeds for 33 LPs; 78s; and 45s.  The gift was accompanied by the first album I ever owned too — “Imagination” from Gladys Knight and the Pips!  A very popular LP at the time, it featured the songs “Midnight Train to Georgia”, “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me” and “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination,” a song that to this day, still inspires me.

Funky New Music

Now I don’t typically write about music at the museum, but there are some artists that I just love and I get really excited when they release new music. So I had to put this info out to the people! There seems to be a lot going on in what I would call the “real” music category right now…
