As not only America, but the world will be zoned into Chapter 7 of “Star Wars” come this Friday, there’s plenty of Funky films to be seen. FOUR NEW FUNKY FLICKS, “STAR WARS” & THE GOLDEN GLOBES “Chi-Raq” hit theaters on December 4th. A modern day adaptation of the ancient Greek play Lysistrata by Aristophanes, it’s set against the backdrop of gang violence in Chicago. In a nutshell, women take stand and deny their men sex, until the killing stops.
In the midst of societal ills and personal challenges I look to family and music for solace. Holy Moly! There are a few things that I am remiss about discovering at this juncture and some new releases and tunes forthcoming that I’m very excited to hear. Music serves as therapy for me, and is and will always be, the universal language that conjoins the hearts and minds of humanity.
I believe the best Valentine’s Day gift is not the giving of cards and chocolates, but expressions of communication and clear thoughts. Like every year since we’ve been together, that was the exchange of gifts that my wife and I shared yesterday.
“Christmas time is here, it’s a wonderful time of the year,” is the sentiment in the hearts of many, but not everyone. While I don’t promote hypocrisy, I do believe that people should make more of an effort to be kind during the holidays. Why not? Especially if you’re not one who’s kind all year round, which brings me to my reason for this item…
One of the best Christmas presents I have ever received is a turntable. In fact, every turntable I’ve ever owned, was a Christmas present. The first one was from my mom. It was a Hi-Fi Stereo component, with adjusting speeds for 33 LPs; 78s; and 45s. The gift was accompanied by the first album I ever owned too — “Imagination” from Gladys Knight and the Pips! A very popular LP at the time, it featured the songs “Midnight Train to Georgia”, “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me” and “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination,” a song that to this day, still inspires me.
Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Jay-Z are the producers for the films “Free Angela and All Political Prisoners” and “Annie.” This marks Jay-Z’s company’s first two efforts in film. In addition to starring in movies like “Independence Day”, “Enemy of the State”, “Wild Wild West”, “Ali”, “I Am Legend” and the franchise projects “Men in Black”; “Bad Boys”; “Hancock” and “I-Robot”…
This Christmas I was very fortunate to get the gift of music. Two of my favorite people in the world bestowed treasures upon me that I’ll cherish for years to come. On Christmas Eve, as I did the last of the trimming to the tree, I opened my gift from Chantalle. It was a Beatles Christmas tree ornament. A scenic piece of pottery, the “Fab Four” are presented complete with instruments, as if they’re playing music from their early days of fame.
