Blink-182, Gallant, Lukas Graham, Mike Posner, PartyNextDoor and SOJA are all among the Grammy Award nominees for 2017. Recently I did an article on the fact that Blink has never won a Grammy. The veterans in music among those mentioned, it’s their first time among Grammy nominees, I’m hoping their CD “California” is their “Golden Ticket” for Best Rock Album. http://museumofuncutfunk.com/2016/10/03/didnt-blink-182-win-a-grammy-a-musical-yorn/
FUNK IS GOOD! FUNK is everything you think is Funky, and it doesn’t matter, if nobody else is Groovin’ to it – can ya dig it. FUNK is UNIVERSAL, and it’s the FUNKY string of the universe, that ties us all together. FUNK can be the stench from a dumpster, but my favorite FUNK, is the musical genre. Louis Jordan is the Troglodyte of FUNK music! “The Godfather of Soul,” James Brown, is the quintessential Pioneer of FUNK! Sly Stone, is the Godfather of FUNK and Rick James is the King of Funk-n-Roll. The collective artists of PARLIAMENT – FUNKADELIC featuring George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, took FUNK into the stratosphere, while Kool and the Gang kept it Dirty and Down to Earth…
Back in the day, “Krush Groove”, was the quintessential hip-hop flick. It was released through Warner Brothers studios in 1985, one year after the success of Prince’s “Purple Rain”, and starred his then protégé and companion Sheila E. Although rap and the culture of hip-hop, are rooted in advocating anti-establishment values and not “selling out”, ever since “Boyz N’ the Hood”, it’s been all about cashing in.
When I think of a movie that’s done multiple sequels, the first one that comes to mind is “Rocky.” After that, there’s “Star Wars,” and it’s now forthcoming follow-ups; the “Star Trek” franchise; Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” prequel flicks; “Mission Impossible” (MI5 out 7/31); “Godzilla” movies and “The Fast and the Furious.”
Straight outta the U.K., FKA Twigs’ new album “LP1” dropped the latter part of last year. Real name Tahliah Debrett Barnett, she’s an English singer-songwriter, producer and dancer originally from Gloucestershire, that’s already become a trend setter in fashion.
This is in celebration of 14 pages of the Funkalicious blog. In lieu of current events, I simply want to document profound photos of yesteryear and yesterday… another PSA
Classic definition: Judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind; i.e. “a classic novel” — A work of art of recognized and established value. This is a definitely a title befitting of the FX television series “American Horror Story.” Created and executive produced by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, who brought the TV viewing public “Glee” and “Nip/Tuck,” the show is in its fourth FUNKY season and was recently greenlit for a Funkalicious fifth.
Not too long ago, Laurence Fishburne played “Dr. Raymond Langston” in CBS’ CSI series, but first he was Dr. Joshua “Josh” Hall (#1) on “One Life to Live” on ABC TV from ’73 to ’76; he did a television movie, then began a career in film. He took on a role with Pee Wee’s Playhouse as “Cowboy Curtis” from 86 to 90; and most recently was “Jack Crawford” in the small screen version of “Hannibal,” that was based on the character made famous in the Oscar award winning film, “The Silence of the Lambs.”
Benjamin Booker is a raw new talent out of New Orleans! He recently made his network television debut on “The Late Show w/ David Letterman,” and his self-titled debut album is in stores now – performance on Letterman here… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8VyRO2iqeg
Prince is releasing not one, but 2 new albums this fall. Expected for release on September 30th, “Art Official Age,” is a solo project and “Plectrumelectrum,” is the long anticipated project that features 3rdEyeGirl. Friends and fans may already have seen the video for the previously released single, “Breakfast Can Wait,” which features Dave Chapelle on the cover art – if not, go here… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHbyNrGXpAA…
In the midst of turmoil, even when the worst of matters are smacking folks of all cultures in the face, a spade gon’ be a spade. “Call a Spade a Spade”: To tell the truth about something, even if it is not polite or pleasant. Pertaining to ethnicity, the phrase predates the use of the word “spade” as an ethnic slur against black people, which was not recorded until 1928. This item encompasses a bit of both regarding recent public and personal occurrences.
Charlie Wilson is without a doubt one of the best return to music stories in R&B. I won’t call it a comeback, cause he’s been here for years, with one of the FUNKIEST bands in the ‘80s – The GAP Band. Lionel Richie was down with the Commodores before his solo success, and today they both have songs, backing major brands.
James Brown’s biopic “Get On Up” hits theaters today. In the spirit of FUNK, I wanted to share an interview I did with him for those who might want to hear the actual voice, of “The Godfather of Soul.” Then I figured, why not include three other masters, of the FUNK genre. Having the honor to speak with these men were not only a highlight of my career in music, but in life, as they provided the soundtrack to it (click on photo above for full view).
There’s a lot of new music out there! Now, all new music isn’t necessarily good or FUNKY, but here’s some that is… acknowledging “Ladies First”, out of the world of hip-hop, is Amethyst Amelia Kelly, better known by her stage name Iggy Azalea. An Australian recording artist and model from Mullumbimby, New South Wales, she’s got “It.”
In general, I tend to be inspired by those younger than myself. Sometimes there are youths that inspire me from a backwards place.
I Funkin’ LOVE Tamar Braxton’s new CD! If you haven’t heard it, GET IT, it’s unquestionably one of the best in R&B this year. Titled “Love And War,” it’s actually set a record in Billboard history. The album features the hit “The One,” which samples the classic Mtume jam, “Juicy.”
P!nk’s new single “True Love” parallels the theme of her new movie “Thanks for Sharing.” A story about recovering sex addicts, P!nk plays “Dede”, one of several participants in a twelve-step program for sex addiction. In the process,”Dede” may actually find ‘true love’ for the first time. The video for “True Love” has been getting a lot of attention, as it’s reflective of the entertainer’s actual life.
Let’s try this again… some where along the course of blogging I made an error, as the blog I anticipated would hold the first position on the eighth page of the Funkalicious Blog, ended up as the fourth one? I don’t know, but it gives me an excuse to talk about FUNKY #9. How can a number be FUNKY you may be thinking…
Charles Walker delivers funky original melodies on the sax and keyboards, while Porsche Carmon accents his music with her brand of soul on lead vocals. If Jill Scott and Pam Grier had a baby, it would be Porsche Carmon, that’s FUNK Sho’ Nuff.
