If and when you’re in L.A. and need a dose of some FUNK, check out The Mason Affair. These guys have been compared to the likes of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Aloe Blacc, Ozomatli, Parliament/Funkadelic and Galactic. For me they’re a great fusion band of FUNK and Jazz, bringing flavor on their songs “All Night”, “I Can Tell You” and “Eyes On Fire.”

While I was paying homage to and celebrating the birthday of the greatest entertainer of all time, the Godfather of Soul James Brown, my facebook friend Jon Daniels asked if I had a set of Black and Brown Trading Stamps in the Museum Of UnCut Funk collection. I received an image of Luis’ work that was sent to me via facebook. I have never seen graphic design quite like this before. Being such a huge fan of 1970′s Black culture, Luis’ creations blew me away. His designs are very Afrocentric, which of course is appealing to me. His intricate patterns of iconic figures like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Prince and Marvin Gaye are so beautiful that they speak for themselves. I think you are going to like his work.

Can you believe that Sesame Street turned 40 in 2009? I was lucky enough to see this revolutionary children’s educational series at the very beginning, when in my opinion it was the best show on TV. Ask any body else who was a kid under 5 at that time and they will tell you the same thing.
The Soul Of Sesame Street – Soul Alphabet
One thing that I loved about watching Sesame Street was that you would often see your favorite Black actors, musicians and athletes hanging out with the muppets. Everyone from Lena Horne to Ray Charles to Richard Pryor to Arthur Ashe made appearances on Sesame Street. I didn’t know at that time that I was being treated to performances by some of the biggest icons of entertainment and sports. I just knew that it was funky and really appreciated seeing cool Black people interacting with my favorite puppets.
FUNKY BIOPICS: Films on Black Superstars – Hendrix, Franklin and Jackson
It’s official, Andre 3000 of OutKast, real name Andre Benjamin has been cast to portray Jimi Hendrix in the biopic “All Is By My Side.” Benjamin’s name was mentioned a few years ago about taking on the role, but rumors died after about a month or so. “All Is By My Side” will be set in the 1960s just before the release of Jimi’s debut album “Are You Experienced.”
FUNKED UP! The Music of SOUL 2 – Seal and Heidi’s Split
Seal’s new CD “SOUL 2″ is in stores. A follow-up to his “SOUL” release, it’s a collection of covers by some of music’s greatest performers. Although Seal has a new album out, he’s singing a different tune in regards to his marriage to fashion icon Heidi Klum. Klium and Seal were a power couple! Two accomplished people in their respective fields that came together by way of commonalities in their lifestyles, they had a tremendous presence.

The Museum of UnCut Funk recently featured Kagan McLeod and his Infinite Kung Fu graphic novel in Aesthetic Grooves. VERY FUNKY STUFF. While checking out Kagan’s work I stumbled across his amazing music themed ink drawings of some of my musical heroes. I reached out to Kagan and got his approval to post this work on our site. This cat creates some of the flyest images that fully represents what the Museum is all about.

Two of music’s favorite children made their transitions recently. One was once considered the Queen of the Blues, the other a Master of Funk. I’m speaking of Etta James and Jimmy Castor, two people in music that may not have always been top of mind as artists via the mainstream, but certainly loved and highly respected among their fans and peers.

As you know, I love Blaxploitation. What I dig most about these films is that a number of them took place in NYC. With all the jive-talking, gun-toting, leather-wearing, cocaine and heroin sniffin’ pimps, not to mention the outrageous outfits, cars and of course the women, all of these films had a funky inner-city vibe that was quite campy and extremely cheesy. I JUST LOVE IT!!!
