As not only America, but the world will be zoned into Chapter 7 of “Star Wars” come this Friday, there’s plenty of Funky films to be seen. FOUR NEW FUNKY FLICKS, “STAR WARS” & THE GOLDEN GLOBES “Chi-Raq” hit theaters on December 4th. A modern day adaptation of the ancient Greek play Lysistrata by Aristophanes, it’s set against the backdrop of gang violence in Chicago. In a nutshell, women take stand and deny their men sex, until the killing stops.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film “Inherent Vice” hits theaters on January 9th. The seventh feature from P.T., it stars Joaquin Phoenix, who starred in his last movie “The Master.” Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Benicio del Toro, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Owen Wilson and Eric Roberts are also cast in the picture, set in the 70’s, about an adventure of an L.A. detective.
There was a lot of FUNKY Music this year! Not limited to the genre of FUNK, several icons and legends in music released new albums, as well as some of music’s newer FUNKY artists. Here’s the FUNKALICIOUS list for 2014…
The year is half-way over as summer is upon us. The first five months flew by to me, but since 2012, my thinking has been that 2013 & 14 are merely set-up and transitional for 2015. I don’t even know why I’ve thought that way, “it’s just a feeling I’ve got.” I personally moved to Boston this year and graduated from college last year, so perhaps it was just the transitions of my life that I foresaw.
The hit AMC television series “Breaking Bad” ends this summer. Starring Bryan Cranston as “Heisenberg,” it co-stars Aaron Paul who portrays “Jesse” on the show. While a family was on tour in Los Angeles from Ireland, Paul left his home to greet them at their van. See the clip below, apologies for the doughnut w/ annoying commentator:
Denzel Washington stars in the new movie “2 Guns”. A crime-drama, Mark Walberg co-stars, in this tale of two cops on a mission. As posted on imdb, “A DEA agent and an undercover Naval Intelligence officer who have been tasked with investigating one another find they have been set up by the mob — the very organization the two men believe they have been stealing money from.”
A fan of “True Blood” since its inception, I’ve noticed a little extra flavor this season. We’re about at the halfway mark and it looks like we’ll be killing “Warlow” on Sunday judging from the previews — I was thinking it was gonna take all season, but I digress, back to the FUNK. Retta from the sitcom “Parks and Recreation” hosted the season premiere at club “Fangtasia” for starters.
P!nk’s new single “True Love” parallels the theme of her new movie “Thanks for Sharing.” A story about recovering sex addicts, P!nk plays “Dede”, one of several participants in a twelve-step program for sex addiction. In the process,”Dede” may actually find ‘true love’ for the first time. The video for “True Love” has been getting a lot of attention, as it’s reflective of the entertainer’s actual life.
Spike Lee and Spike Jonze both have new films in theaters this fall. Two of today’s most innovative directors, they both have a distinctive style that sets them apart from men behind the camera of yesteryear. In addition to displaying aspects of the human condition, Jonze and Lee get to deliver it in ways Hollywood only, and never dreamed of. Before “Being John Malcovich” was released, there had never been a film quite like it. Once Lee made his way into the fray, more black people began working in the industry of film than ever before.
Tom Hanks is making his Broadway debut this season in Nora Ephron’s final play “Lucky Guy.” Bette Midler is even returning to the “Great White Way” for a one-woman-show in “I’ll Eat You Last,” where she’ll depict the life of Hollywood agent Sue Mengers. Although shows with Tom and Bette are exciting, after a 30-year absence, acclaimed actress Cicely Tyson returns to the stage for “The Trip to Bountiful” – that’s entertainment!
