Camila Cabello, Bebe Rexha and Dua Lipa, are just a few female talents that had breakthrough success, over the past year. I speak of these three in particular, because whenever I heard their music prior to knowing who they were, I was like I need to know these artists! A lot like in the realm of Halsey and SZA last year.
Prince’s release “Hit N Run,” was a definite favorite of mine last year… http://museumofuncutfunk.com/2015/12/07/the-funky-top-10-for-2015/ – Now his majesty has followed it up with “Hit N Run: Phase Two”…
“What Now?” is Kevin Hart’s fifth major LIVE stand-up outing. I had the fortune to attend the second set on his stop in Boston last night at TD Garden — he killed it. I LOVE comedy shows! Over the years I’ve seen Paul Mooney, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, each of them two or more times.
According to CBS’s website: 25-time Grammy Award winner Stevie Wonder will be honored in a star-studded musical primetime special “Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key Of Life — An All-Star GRAMMY Salute.” It airs on CBS next Monday, February 16th at 9pm/8pm central.
Greetings Friends, Funk-A-Teers and Lovers of R&B… Take a trip with me as we STEP INTO THE FUNK, acknowledging the genius of my musical hero and namesake, Stevie Wonder.
Stevie Wonder is taking “Songs in the Key of Life” on the road! He initially announced the tour about a year ago, but dates for the road trip, hit the Internet just last month. I got the news via http://insideplaya.wordpress.com about a week or so ago! I didn’t recall having heard about it before – then I spoke to a fellow Wonder lovers, and they too said they hadn’t heard yet either. I am generally the one to hear about major music events among my immediate family and friends — then our cousin Stevie told us that he wanted to write something for The Museum of UnCut Funk. His inspiration, to talk about his memories connected to the album, made me begin to think of mine…
Liken to three men who believed in equality, peace and respect for human life, three men brought joy, comic relief and hope to millions of people. Three men assassinated for being committed to their beliefs will forever have their place in history, for living up to a standard that they believed everybody deserved.
Lenny is dropping his new album “Strut” on September 23rd! Rockin’ since 1989, his debut album, was “Let Love Rule.” I remember his then wife, Lisa Bonet, coming to visit us at WBLS to promote her man’s new music. We played it while she sat with us in the studio, and chatted about his musical vision, when NOBODY else did. Although his sound wasn’t traditionally that, of what one would hear on an R&B station, we supported him. We were ‘BLS, we played Queen and INXS – why? Because it was Dope!
Patti LaBelle is back on Broadway this month! Appearing in the stage production of “After Midnight,” she fills in where Vanessa Williams, Toni Braxton and Fantasia have all taken bows, opposite Dule Hill http://museumofuncutfunk.com/2014/02/25/vanessa-williams-funks-up-broadway-again/. Her run goes through June 29th at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
I Funkin’ LOVE Tamar Braxton’s new CD! If you haven’t heard it, GET IT, it’s unquestionably one of the best in R&B this year. Titled “Love And War,” it’s actually set a record in Billboard history. The album features the hit “The One,” which samples the classic Mtume jam, “Juicy.”
Chris Rock is presently shooting his new film “Finally Famous.” Starring Kevin Hart, Rosario Dawson, Gabrielle Union and Rock, it’s said to be an edgy showbiz-themed comedy with romance. Given the Hart/ Rock combo, in addition to the talents of J.B. Smoove, Sherri Shepherd, Romany Malco and rising starlet Haley Marie Norman, I anticipate lots of laughs. “Finally Famous” is Rock’s third direction, following his features “Head of State” and “I Think I Love My Wife.”
Dave Chapelle wraps a run of shows in Atlanta tomorrow night. The brilliant sketch comedian began his run of performances on Thursday at ATL’s Tabernacle concert hall, which sold out almost immediately, prompting LIVE Nation to add more shows. Chapelle’s closing show marks seven sold out sets, that included opening night; and early and late shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday… I smell a DVD. Eight shows evolving from one initial scheduled show, THAT’S FUNKY!!!
