As not only America, but the world will be zoned into Chapter 7 of “Star Wars” come this Friday, there’s plenty of Funky films to be seen. FOUR NEW FUNKY FLICKS, “STAR WARS” & THE GOLDEN GLOBES “Chi-Raq” hit theaters on December 4th. A modern day adaptation of the ancient Greek play Lysistrata by Aristophanes, it’s set against the backdrop of gang violence in Chicago. In a nutshell, women take stand and deny their men sex, until the killing stops.
As music fans, lovers and aficionados are perched and waiting for “Get On Up” and “Jimi: All Is by My Side,” one can’t help but think of musical biopics that have been previously released. This blog was prompted and inspired by a chat with, and query from my wife, as to how many films of this nature have been done — there are numerous. While many are excited for the lives of James Brown and Jimi Hendrix to grace the silver screen, the lives of other music icons have been brilliantly depicted. (click on photo above for full view)
Here are the facts: Lauryn Hill was sued for not paying collaborators on her Grammy Award winning album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” and now she’s in jail for tax evasion. I’m not even versed with the details in either case, I don’t really need to be, those that sued her got paid and now she’s been locked up for not paying the government. Hill posted an open letter on June 28th, the day before she was incarcerated for her three month sentence. While she unquestionably speaks the truth in it, I don’t know how much of it has to do with HER not paying her taxes. It’s below from her Tumbler page:
Holy Summer Blockbusters! Universal’s “The Purge” will lead the box office this weekend for raking in the dough. The film studio is riding high right now, as “Fast & Furious 6” topped the box office last week, making it number-one two weeks in a row! I just knew “After Earth” would take the top spot, since ‘Furious’ was released for Memorial Day Weekend… WRONG!
“Iron Man 3” was number-one at the box office after the weekend results were all totaled. According to boxofficemojo.com it took in an estimated $175.3 million dollars. This ranks it the second all-time highest grossing movie opening behind last year’s “The Avengers”, which took in $207.4 million. The movie is also doing well overseas, and is on its way to earning well over $1 billion worldwide.
According to Shadow and Act, Spike Lee spent years trying to get his Jackie Robinson project financed and produced (unsuccessfully), only to eventually watch Legendary Pictures and Brian Helgeland launch their own Jackie Robinson picture with Chadwick Boseman. In a recent interview with Miles Davis’ son, Erin Davis, and nephew Vince Wilburn Jr., it was revealed that Antoine Fuqua is set to direct the Miles Davis biopic. UPDATE 6/27: Don is now set to direct. I was alerted to this fact via indiewire.com, through an interview they posted from the Wall Street Journal’s Lee Hawkins about the new Miles Davis postage stamp!

It’s official, Andre 3000 of OutKast, real name Andre Benjamin has been cast to portray Jimi Hendrix in the biopic “All Is By My Side.” Benjamin’s name was mentioned a few years ago about taking on the role, but rumors died after about a month or so. “All Is By My Side” will be set in the 1960s just before the release of Jimi’s debut album “Are You Experienced.”
