Janelle Monae is known to most via her appearance on Big Boi’s compilation release Big Boi Presents… Got Purp? Vol. II. Featured on the album is an uptempo remake of the DeBarge classic “Time Will Reveal,” which still gets airplay, and the track “Lettin’ Go,” my favorite song on the CD.
A native of Kansas City, she moved to New York after graduating high school. There she attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, setting her sights on musical theater. Monae left the Big Apple to take a bite out of the Peach that is Atlanta. Prior to meeting Big Boi, she connected with her now partners in Wondaland Arts Society, an eclectic group of local artists.
In 2007, she released her EP “The Chase,” a concept piece featuring the character “Cindi Mayweather.” Its release led to Sean “Diddy” Combs signing her in 2008. Songs from “The Chase” are on her debut album, “The ArchAndroid.” Below is Janelle Monáe’s video for her track “Tightrope.” Featuring Big Boi, the new “Princess of FUNK,” pays homage to James Brown with her fancy footwork.
Prince set off the “Welcome 2 America” Tour at the Izod Center on Tuesday. He takes the stage again tonight, and opens at Madison Square Garden this Saturday.
Keep FUNK Alive
