A Different FUNKIN’ Perspective on SLY/ Words from ZEK aka Cecil Womack

 
 
Recent reports would have us believe that Sly Stone is destitute and homeless. Although the now Michael Jackson Estate owns the publishing of Sly Stone’s music, he still has ownership as a writer. How much money he has or as to extent of what his resources are are unbeknown-st to me and none of my business, but I hope and believe the living legend is actually not on his last leg.

In lieu of  all the hoopla, my long time friends and colleagues Zek and Zeriiya Zekkariyas a.k.a. Womack & Womack, sent a message to our mutual friend Sparkie Martin. The Womack family are music royalty and have known Sly Stone for years.  Below is a letter from Zek & Zeriiya regarding the news stories about Sly being homeless: PLEASE GET THIS MESSAGE, RE: SLY – TO WHOMEVER IT CAME FROM – I FIGURE THIS IS THE TIME, TO KILL TWO BIRDS, WITH ONE ‘STONE’. FIRST LITTLE BIRDIE IS:  ZEK & ZERIIYA ZEKKARIYAS, DON’T USE THE SLAVE NAMES, CECIL & LINDA WOMACK NO MORE.  WE INTRODUCED THAT, ON THE ‘TRANSFORMATION’ L.P. 1990.

ON THE OTHER BIRDIE: SLY, HAS ALWAYS LIVED IN A VAN, OR CAMPER, WITH A PORTABLE STUDIO INSIDE – INCOGNITO. AS A MATTER OF FACT – HE PLAYED THE SONG ‘FAMILY AFFAIRE’, FOR US, INSIDE OF HIS CAMPER VAN. SLY’S NEVER LIVED IN BEVERLY HILLS OR HOLLYWOOD. OR ANY ‘HILLS’ WHERE ‘SO-CALLED’ STARS HIDEOUT. HE KEPT HIS SAME, CONTINENTAL FLAT, IN FRISCO. AND STILL HAS IT TODAY. LAST I HEARD, HE WAS IN A MUSIC STORE, IN CENTURY CITY, AND PURCHASED $30,000.00 USD WORTH OF EQUIPMENT.

NOW, I KNOW, RECORD COMPANIES, STEAL ARTISTES’ MONEY – BUT, AS A WRITER, SLY’S CATALOGUE, WILL EARN HIM MONEY, THE REST OF HIS LIFE. IT’S ‘ONE OF A KIND’. HE CAN HIBERNATE, ON ‘TAKE YOU HIGHER’, ALONE.

SHOOT THIS BACK, TO ALL THE PEOPLE – WITH THE WRONG INFORMATION.  CREATIVE PEOPLE,  SOMETIME,  HAVE ENEMIES. . .  BUT, SLY HAS KILLED SEVERAL BIRDS, WITH ONE ‘STONE’.

I had the fortune of touring South Africa with the Zekkariyas family. I have no doubt or questions about their evaluation of Sly Stone’s current circumstances.

In closing, I’d love to get to Sly myself, however time and resources are an unfortunate hindrance. This has been a FUNKIN’ different perspective on Sly Stone, breathe in, and exhale….
