This Friday and over the next several months, seven FUNKY Sci-Fi flicks are set to hit the silver screen. Starring the likes of Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Harrison Ford, Tilda Swinton, Idris Elba, Matt Damon, George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, it looks like we’re in store for some great acting amidst the stars.
I used imdb.com as a reference to acquire some of the synopsis on the following films. In theaters this Friday is “The Host.” When an unseen enemy threatens mankind by taking over their bodies and erasing their memories, Melanie will risk everything to protect the people she cares most about, proving that love can conquer all in a dangerous new world. The story was written by author Stephenie Meyer, who’s the mind behind the ‘Twilight’ film series. The stars of the film are all relative newcomers, featuring Saoirse Ronan, who blew us away in “Hanna” and “The Lovely Bones.”
In a post-apocalyptic era, a veteran assigned to extract Earth’s remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself. He discovers a world of people underground he was never aware of in the aftermath of catastrophic events in “Oblivion.” Starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman, it hits theaters on April 19th. Director David Fincher is hoping Freeman will be interested in another Sci-Fi adventure. In 2011 he told totalfilm.com: “‘Rendezvous With Rama’ is a great story that has an amazing role for Morgan Freeman who is an amazing actor and would be amazing in this thing. The question was can we get a script that’s worthy of Morgan and can we get a script that is worthy of Arthur Clarke (author) and can we do all of that in an envelope that will allow the movie to take the kinds of chances that it wants to take.” No news yet on whether this project will even go into production, as it’s still in “development,” we’ll keep you posted.
“After Earth” pairs up father and son once again, as Will & Jaden Smith are the stars of the new M. Night Shyamalan movie. A crash landing leaves Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help. Shyamalan’s last film was “The Last Airbender,” which followed his releases “The Happening” and “Lady in the Water,” all of which got mixed reviews. He needs a hit, and the Smith combo may be it! Bringing the father and son team back together for the second time, who worked together in the Overbrook Films production, “The Pursuit of Happyness.” “After Earth” comes to theaters in June.
Directed by Guillermo del Toro, “Pacific Rim” stars Idris Elba and Ron Perlman. Perlman was the lead in del Toro’s “Hellboy” movies. When an alien attack threatens the Earth’s existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the enemy. It’s due this July, a week after “The Lone Ranger” ‘Hi-Ho’s it to the Silver’ screen with Johnny Depp!
“Gravity” stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. Recently completed, it’s a story of how Astronauts attempt to return to earth after debris crashes into their space shuttle, that’s left them drifting alone in space. It’s scheduled for October 4th.
Set in the year 2159, “Elysium,” depicts an era where the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. Starring Matt Damon as “Max,” he takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds. Jodie Foster also stars in this Sci-Fi flick, that’s expected to hit theaters on August 9th, it was originally set for this month. This Neill Blomkamp’s new film, the guy who wrote and directed “District 9.”
In the movie “Ender’s Game,” starring Harrison Ford and Abigail Breslin, 70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare Earth survivors for a future invasion. It kicks off the holiday season, hitting screens on November 1st.
Another Sci-Fi flick expected this year is “Snowpiercer.” It takes place in 2031, where passengers on a train are the only survivors on Earth. Starring Chris Evans of “Captain America” and “Fantastic Four” fame opposite Tilda Swinton, it has no official release date yet.
Not to leave out one this summer’s highly anticipated blockbusters in Sci-Fi, Star Trek Into Darkness takes a voyage to the movies on May 17th. After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk, played again by Chris Pine, leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. Zoe Saldana returns as “Nyota Uhura,” before the character gained Lieutenant status. Okay so that’s nine, but Seven FUNKY Sci-Fi Flicks sounds better 😉
