On the day after Eric Holder announces the results of the Federal Investigation on Ferguson… Shonda Rhimes incorporates the essence of current events on “Scandal,” presenting the horror of the Michael Brown case and addressing the issue of “illegal immigrants”, via “Olivia Pope” ala Kerry Washington.
Rhimes has been a force in pop culture for over fifteen years now, but it wasn’t until “Scandal” that she became noted as a “Starchild.” The success of “Grey’s Anatomy” and the hype of “Dr. McDreamy,” was the motivating factor, that gave her the ammunition to get “Scandal” off. Anyone reading this blog already knows what time it is. So this is not me having a soapbox moment about social injustice and prejudice that has existed across this great nation of ours for years, no, it’s Ms. Rhimes using her power in media to enhance the social discourse.
Equally as impressive, long before I even cared about watching the show, on the rare moments I’d catch a glimpse of it… I have ALWAYS appreciated her using FUNKY music. Week after week, EVERY SINGLE WEEK, Rhimes has continually and consistently used the music of black artists as the soundtrack for “Scandal.” Her use of classic hits, puts royalty checks in the pockets of some of America’s most treasured music makers, whose music will ring in the hearts and minds of millions until the end of time.
The Museum of UnCut Funk’s primary motivation is to recognize and glorify the art of black culture. Liken to one of the words in the name of this site, Rhimes pays tribute to FUNK in Funkalicious Fashion — Much Respect Shonda for being an advocate for the preservation of the FUNK!
