Greetings Friends, Funk-A-Teers and Lovers of R&B… Take a trip with me as we STEP INTO THE FUNK, acknowledging the genius of my musical hero and namesake, Stevie Wonder.
Here’s some basic background info for the uninitiated, uninformed and anyone else who has lived under a rock for the last few decades. Stevland Judkins Hardaway Morris, aka Stevie Wonder was born May, 13th, 1950. Signed by Berry Gordy at the age of 12, he was only 13 when his live rendition of “Fingertips” hit #1 on both the Pop and R/B charts. Now this musical genius is about to go on tour. Celebrating the 38th anniversary of — in my mind his most innovative, creative and emotionally stimulating album ever recorded – “SONGS in the Keys of Life” (SITKOL). When released in September of ’76, it became the first album by an American artist to debut at #1, where it remained for 14 weeks. This immense project was formulated after the signing of a new contract with MOTOWN in’75. Giving Stevie Wonder a 7year/ 7LP deal, valued at 37-million-dollars, with full artistic control. Making it the largest and most lucrative contract for an artist up to that point. This new tour practically coincides with the aforementioned release date. All through his blessed career, S. W.’s message has been one of spirituality, unity and especially love. Pick up any album by him and you will see what I mean. But this message was explicitly inspired for the love and respect for SITKOL. I will end by saying this mans’ message and music was valid then, and is even more so today.
Thank you for coming along for a brief ride through my mind, and taking in a little music history. This item was a first for me in this developing age of technology. “I’ll Be Back” to share my thoughts, and trust that you will join me, as we STEP INTO THE FUNK…
Peace & Love
