The trailer for “Black Panther” debuted during the play-offs, and the super-hero/ black action movie lover tribe, beat drums of joy throughout the matrix of the universe. Here’s the trailer…
This is the first “super-hero” feature based on a black character from the Marvel franchise. Before Marvel became the undisputed leader of the comic book adapt genre with “Iron Man” and “The Avengers,” their brand was on Todd McFarlane’s “Spawn,” that starred Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo. But “Spawn” ain’t a “Super-Hero.” There’s the “Blade” franchise with Wesley Snipes, although Marvel, it’s a vampire story. “War Machine” is featured in ‘Iron Man,’ “The Falcon” is “Captain America’s” side-kick, and “Storm” is an “X-Men,” but they ain’t the leads. “Power Man,” the urban “SUPER-HERO” aka “Luke Cage,” is a well done Internet series on Netflix. The ABC TV series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” introduced “Cyborg” to live action, bringing that black Marvel character to life. “Black Panther” is a major motion picture.
Michael B. Jordan took some bigoted heat, for being a black “Johnny Storm” in the re-boot, of “The Fantastic Four.” There’s also been several creative alternatives outside of those created by comic book companies. Will Smith, Shaquille O’Neal, Robert Townsend, Daymon Wayans and Chris Rock have all made their contributions…
Another black super-hero from the mind of Stan Lee through Marvel that was introduced the same year as ‘Black Panther’ was “Black Goliath.”
Making movies based on comic books is a regular thing now. While there’s thousands that wish it would stop, there’s millions of movie-goers, that will make sure it doesn’t. There’s a ton of material. There are only a few black super-heroes of note, and “Black Panther” is undoubtedly the most popular, and one that button pushers in Hollywood fortunately think could recoup a profit.
The success of “Wonder Woman” will only encourage more female super-hero leads, and has officially put DC Comics, in the proverbial game. DC’s premiere brother super-hero “Black Lightning,” is on deck with a pilot, it’s set to air in October. If it flies, it’ll be the third super-hero show for the CW following DC characters “(Green) Arrow,” and “Flash” on the television front.
Directed by Ryan Coogler, “Black Panther” is set for release on February 16, 2018. The teaser trailer above generated 89 million views in the first 24 hours of its debut, which aired during the first quarter of Game 4 of the NBA Finals on ABC, before hitting social media.
Chadwick Boseman is “T’Challa” aka Black Panther, the king of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, who must defend his people from threats among and outside of his people’s circle. Black Panther also stars Jordan, Lupita Nyongo, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.
