In October 1966 in Oakland, California, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale established the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. Membership in the original Black Panther Party reached 10,000 by early 1969.

The original Black Panther Party is well known for advocating self-defense of the Black community against the racist murder and brutality of the Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond and San Francisco Police through armed patrols of police activities. The original Black Panther Party also fought to establish greater peoples’ empowerment via community control politics and organized community Survival Programs across the country such as the Free Breakfast For Children Program, community health clinics & ambulance services. The Survival programs to provide needed services to the people.

The Free Breakfast for Children Program, which was the first program began in January 1969 at one small Catholic church in the Fillmore district of San Francisco, and spread to many cities in America where there were Black Panther Party chapters. The Panther’s believed that “Children cannot reach their full academic potential if they have empty stomachs.” Thousands of poor and hungry children were fed free breakfasts every day under this program. The Program became so popular that by the end of the year, the original Black Panther Party set up kitchens in cities across the nation, feeding over 10,000 children every day before they went to school.

The original Black Panther Party was one of the first organizations in U.S. history to militantly struggle for ethnic minority and working class emancipation – a party whose political electoral agenda was the revolutionary establishment of real economic, social, and political equality across gender and color lines, aligning itself with other people of progressive organizations. The original Black Panther Party aligned itself and formed coalitions with other progressive organizations including Cesar Chavez’s Farm Workers Movement, AIM (The American Indian Movement), the Young Lords Movement, the Peace & Freedom Party, SDS, Young Patriots, etc.

The Black Panther Party was a powerful grassroots activist organization that formed coalitions seeking to further our civil human rights and achieve real freedom and justice for all the People. These were the political revolutionary objectives of my Black Panther Party.

Black Panther Party that Huey and I founded was an “All Power To All The People!” organization that worked for self-determination and social justice for all people. It was a powerful grassroots activist organization that formed coalitions seeking to further our civil human rights and achieve real freedom and justice for all the People. These were the political revolutionary objectives of our Black Panther Party.

This is the true history of the original Black Panther Party, it’s true legacy, and an example of how we, the people, must continue the work together as the Black Panther Party did with its allies through coalitions to proactively preserve our constitutional rights.

All Power To All The People!
