FUNK IS GOOD!  FUNK is everything you think is Funky, and it doesn’t matter, if nobody else is Groovin’ to it – can ya dig it.  FUNK is UNIVERSAL, and it’s the FUNKY string of the universe, that ties us all together.  FUNK can be the stench from a dumpster, but my favorite FUNK, is the musical genre.  Louis Jordan is the Troglodyte of FUNK music!  “The Godfather of Soul,” James Brown, is the quintessential Pioneer of FUNK!  Sly Stone, is the Godfather of FUNK and Rick James is the King of Funk-n-Roll.  The collective artists of PARLIAMENT – FUNKADELIC featuring George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, took FUNK into the stratosphere, while Kool and the Gang kept it Dirty and Down to Earth…

There are several more funk-a-teers, among them are Cameo, Chaka Khan, Bobby Byrd, Slave, Patti LaBelle, Jimmy Castor, Prince, even Earth, Wind & Fire had a Funky vibe.  I’ve been getting an earful of some new funky music, and wanted to share it with you, for your consideration.  Florence & The Machine, James Bay, The Weeknd, Keith Richards, Nicki Minaj, Angelique Kidjo, Odesza, The Dead Weather, Andra Day, Diplo (Major Lazer), and Run The Jewels, are not FUNK artists, I just think they’re good.

When Florence & The Machine first dropped, I was like “Whaaat, that ish is DOPE!  Her latest album, “How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful,” lives up to my first impression of her efforts.  The WeekendA long time lover of Angelique Kidjo’s music, she won a Grammy last year for her album “Eve,” her CD “Sings” features the Orchestre Philharmonique Du Luxembourg bringing a classical flavor to her Beninois, French style.  Keith Richards dropped his third studio album “Crosseyed Heart” in September.  The Rolling Stones singer and co-writer’s last solo project, “Main Offender,” was released over ten years ago.  The Weeknd is a crooner who’s star is steadily rising, and he recently made Billboard history, becoming the first male to top the Hot 100, Billboard’s 200 and Artist 100 simultaneously.  His latest release, “Beauty Behind the Madness,” is getting a lot of love.  James Bay is a new artist, his full-length debut “Chaos and the Calm,” is the follow-up to his 2013 EP “The Dark of the Morning.”  He delivers an interesting blend of rock, blues and folk with his music, that’s reminiscent of Benjamin Booker who burst on to the music scene last year.  The Dead Weather is a rock “super group” featuring Jack White.  An all male band with a female lead singer, the video for their song “I Feel Love (Every Million Miles),” is pretty intense…

That ain’t Donna Summer, ‘I Feel Love’, is taken from the band’s third release “Dodge and Burn.”  Odesza is band that has a crazy sonic FUNK, with a fresh unique sound, capturing electronica, dance and pop.  Their record “In Return,” is simply worth a listen no matter what your favorite genre of music.  Diplo ain’t just a high-priced DJ anymore, as he’s been collaborating with several acts, Major Lazer is among the more recent ones he’s done music with.  Andra Day has an angelic voice.  Some may want to put her in the R&B box, but she’s far more talented, as her debut “Cheers to the Fall” proves upon listening.  Killer Mike and El-P dropped their duo effort Run The Jewels in 2013.  If you liked it, you’ll probably LOVE “Run The Jewels 2”, it’s giving more of the same but better.  The southern rapper and producer turned rapper from New York, bring a new twist to the genre, of hip-hop.  Speaking of hip-hop, lastly there’s a new Nicki Minaj disc spinning these days, “Bonnie & Clyde: Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill” is a “mixtape” that’s got a huge buzz.  Nicki Minaj/ New York Times MagazineAs her CD “The Pinkprint” continues to get attention and sales, Minaj is featured on the cover of “The New York Times Magazine” this Sunday, October 11th, but you can click on the link below to read “The Passion Of Nicki Minaj”, right now…  http://nyti.ms/1L5Zcyw
