An Exhibition Of Comic Book Covers Featuring The First Black President Of The United States

The ObamaCon: The Making Of A New Black Superhero Exhibition is our tribute to our first Black President, President Barack Obama.

ObamaCon includes images of original comic books, graphic novels and comic industry magazines from our collection that feature President Obama on the cover.

Because he was soooooo damn calm, cool and collected like that, and actually did rescue the country from impending doom and disaster, he became our SuperBad, SuperBlack, Superhero. So we decided to collect artifacts from his Presidency that depicted him exactly like that, our calm, cool, collected and newest Black Superhero. We pay homage to our President by curating our very cool collection of comic books, graphic novels and comic industry magazines that feature President Barack Obama on the cover into a traveling exhibition.

President Barack Obama finished his historic second term as the first Black President of the United States as the most admired man in the country, with a high approval rating and a robust list of accomplishments that will shape his legacy for decades to come.

One of his most enduring achievements will be how he both embraced and shaped popular culture like no other President before him. One of the coolest Presidents in our lifetime, he demonstrated a unique ability to engage and inspire a young multicultural coalition through a rare combination of intellect, compassion and humor.

Candidate Obama was loved by millions, especially within the creative community. Visual artists supported his 2008 campaign with original artwork and posters that reflected his themes of hope and change. Obama also received similar love and admiration from comic artists and the comic book community. Once it was revealed that he was a huge comic book fan and avid collector of Spiderman and Conan The Barbarian comic books, what followed was an explosion of Obama comic book appearances. Candidate, President-Elect and President Obama were immortalized on numerous comic book covers and became central characters in comic book series as well as biographical comics and graphic novels that documented his path to the White House. This was the first time that a winning Black U.S. Presidential Candidate and Black U.S. President were depicted in comic form. Most of these comic depictions were positive and respectful, capturing Obama in his official capacities as a Presidential candidate and Commander-In-Chief. Some comic depictions even portrayed President Obama as a Black Superhero

President Obama’s improbable election was beyond our imagination, a transformative, barrier-breaking occurrence that many of us thought we would never witness in our lifetime. His campaign and election became larger than life, and as a result, to many Obama took on super human status. It became clear during the 2008 campaign that the next President would need superpowers to save the economy and the country from the biggest economic disaster since the Great Depression. Given the enormity of the task ahead, it was only fitting that Obama was reimagined as a Superhero. President Barack Obama was a role model for every Black child and an inspiration to the Black community, our newest Black Superhero. President Barack Obama also represented the best this country had to offer and progress in our on-going and difficult struggle to achieve equal opportunity for all, our newest American superhero.
