Bill Withers is a living legend.  He is unquestionably, the most regular famous guy, I have had the fortune to talk to.  When Sony/ Columbia Records released a greatest hits collection of his music titled, “The Best of Bill Withers: Lean on Me” back in 2000, I had the honor of doing a phoner interview with him.

“It Comes in Threes” – In Memory of Percy, K2 & Johnny

“It Comes in Threes” is a phrase you’ll hear, usually by way, of unfortunate circumstances.  Nothing could have prepared me for the recent tragic events that I’ve experienced.  Two people that I had the fortune to work with, and one that I have been inspired by, passed on within three days of each other.

NETFLIX KEEPS GETTING FUNKIER

NETFLIX KEEPS GETTING FUNKIER

At it’s inception, Netflix was a cool idea, despite it’s analog entry into the mainstream.  Digital was at the onset of the brand, however a solid cyber foundation was required to couple strategic timing and marketing.  The evolutionary medium recently acquired the rights to air the NBC hit, “The Black List” that stars James Spader, for two-million dollars per episode recently.  Now they’ll enable subscribers to see brand new films simultaneously as they’re released in theaters!  It begins with the sequel to the Ang Lee hit “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

Funk Ad(d)s Up 2 Do$$ars – Part VI: GAP Band vs. Commodores

Charlie Wilson is without a doubt one of the best return to music stories in R&B.  I won’t call it a comeback, cause he’s been here for years, with one of the FUNKIEST bands in the ‘80s – The GAP Band.  Lionel Richie was down with the Commodores before his solo success, and today they both have songs, backing major brands.

Music Favorites (so far) for 2014

Music Favorites (so far) for 2014

The year is half-way over as summer is upon us.  The first five months flew by to me, but since 2012, my thinking has been that 2013 & 14 are merely set-up and transitional for 2015.  I don’t even know why I’ve thought that way, “it’s just a feeling I’ve got.”  I personally moved to Boston this year and graduated from college last year, so perhaps it was just the transitions of my life that I foresaw.

THE FUNKY R&B DUO: Toni Braxton & Babyface

THE FUNKY R&B DUO: Toni Braxton & Babyface

I never heard an R&B duet that I didn’t like.  Over the years there have been hundreds of performances, but the R&B duo as a musical entity, has been limited.  Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton are the male and female who have done it right most recently with the song “So In Love,” from Scott’s CD “The Light of the Sun.”  This was a track that no true program director in the genre of Urban music could deny — they did the damn thing.

AT LAST, IT’S JUST BEGUN: THE BEST IN FUNK – LEGENDS IN MUSIC

Two of music’s favorite children made their transitions recently.  One was once considered the Queen of the Blues, the other a Master of Funk.  I’m speaking of Etta James and Jimmy Castor, two people in music that may not have always been top of mind as artists via the mainstream, but certainly loved and highly respected among their fans and peers.
