Katy Perry’s new single “Roar” will surely take the number-one spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart next week. The song was held off from taking the top of the chart by Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” which holds the position for an 11th week. The hit tune, featuring T.I. and Pharrell, leads “Radio Songs” for a seventh week according to Nielsen BDS reports. Thike’s track barely held off Perry’s “Roar,” which went from 85 to Number-2, following its first full week of single sales.
Of her new single she says: “This new song is called ‘Roar.’ It’s a bit of a self-empowering type of song. I wrote it because I was sick of keeping all these feelings inside and not speaking up for myself, which caused a lot of resentment. Obviously I’ve been through a lot of therapy since my last record and that’s what this is about,” according to a Perez Hilton article. 
So what’s so “FUNKY (&) NAUGHTY” about Katy Perry though, I know I’d be saying by now… She’s FUNKY because her songs inspire hope and encourage millions of young ladies, enabling them to boost their self esteem. That’s just in a nutshell. She’s worn some outrageous Funky fashions that harken back to the boldness of LaBelle, and one could say her ad for her single “Roar” is channeling Josephine Baker.
I’m not saying her outfits look like any of those worn by the legendary divas, I’m just saying it takes guts to wear, and pull off, some of the outfits that LaBelle and Katy have worn. Katy’s Funky because in a Billboard article this past April she described her new CD “Prism” as a “schizophrenic” album, saying “When I tell the record company when I want to release the album, that’s when the race starts. That’s when I put pressure on myself.” Her new CD features producers she’s worked with in the past, and Oscar Award winning rapper Juicy J on her track “Dark Horse.” Juicy J is not the first rapper she’s worked with, her song “California Gurls” featured Snoop Dogg; and she did a single with Kanye West called “E.T.” that’s only available as an import.
“Roar” is the lead single from “Prism” set to hit stores in October — she worked with her dream team including Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Bonnie McKee, who produced hits for her 2010 album “Teenage Dream.” “Prism” also features collaborations with Sarah Hudson, Cirkut and Stacie Orrico. Other songs on the new project are “Walking On Air”, “Unconditionally”, “Love Me” and “This Is How We Do.” Of “Walking on Air,” she says I “really wanna bring that kind of authentic 90’s deep house song styling back.” A listening party took place for her forthcoming release last Thursday, September 5, the same day the video for “Roar” debuted. She performed “Roar” for the first time at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, I actually worked on the show. At MTV’s VMAs, Perry stated that the album wont be dark as she previously stated, saying: “I think I actually said that when I was in a darker place in my life and the reason why I called this record ‘Prism’ is because I actually finally let the light in and then I was able to create all these songs that were inspired by letting the light in and doing some self-reflection and just kind of working on myself, I felt very prismatic because of that; I feel like now I get to show these songs off and share these songs with the listeners and it’s almost like I get to beam the colors that I’ve experienced out from me. There’s not really any darkness on the record, there’s definitely some textures and colors but I think I was saying that when I saw going through a different phase, but I really let that light in.” It’s Funky to be open, candid and realize that while the state of your being affects how you express yourself at times, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s how you really feel.
Katy’s gold “Prism” truck made an appearance at the show in New York, and it’s been making its way across the United States. So far, it’s stopped in Kansas City, Denver, Los Angeles (where it debuted), and Las Vegas. It’s stopped in several other cities around the country, however on August 9th, it was hit by a drunk driver in Pennsylvania, essentially ending its run. What’s not FUNKY about a Gold Truck?
So why is Katy NAUGHTY? Katy’s naughty because while she’s one of the best there is in pop music, coated with sugar, bubble-gum and everything nice… Ms. Perry’s not the sweet innocent girl next door, in other circles outside her millions of adoring female fans. Her debut CD was titled “One of the Boys.” Although my initial perception of her held a halo above her head with horns after hearing her hit “I Kissed A Girl” — I gradually began to realize that Katy considers herself somewhat of a bad girl in a mans world OR a woman taking charge playing by men’s rules (ala Madonna). Peep this, she married and dated two of the most notoriously noted, confirmed, admitted celebrity man whores that are Russell Brand and John Mayer. At first I was like, “What is she doing? Whyyyy?” Did she think she could change them? — but she was well aware, it didn’t matter what, I thought. Now I realize, Katy’s just naughty that way, she’s putting it out there all the time. In 2010, she did a photo shoot with famous British fashion photographer Perou for the September issue of ‘Q’ magazine. Everything about these shots is FUNKY & NAUGHTY…
As previously mentioned, Katy has a bold fashion sense. At the Grammy Awards earlier this year, she wore a dress that got quite the reaction from the masses, in particular — Ellen DeGeneres.
