On Saturday, June 7th of 2014, Tracy Morgan’s limo bus was pulverized by a Walmart tractor trailer on the New Jersey Turnpike, as it was in route to New York after a performance in Delaware. Morgan’s friend and comedy writer, James “Jimmy Mack” McNair, was killed in the accident. Morgan himself experienced brain trauma, a broken leg and broken ribs, from the tragic occurrence.
On Monday, June 1st, Tracy made his first public appearance since the incident on the “Today” show. In an interview with Matt Lauer, accompanied by his lawyer Benedict Morelli, Morgan began to cry when talking about the crash. He said he didn’t remember the accident, and learned about the death of McNair, after he awoke from a coma two weeks later. He vows to return to the stage and resume his life entertaining his fans, friends and the public, once he’s fully healed.
Tracy settled out of court with Walmart for an undisclosed amount and says he’s pleased with how they took care of McNair’s family. “Bones heal, but the loss of my friend will never heal,” Morgan said. “I’m happy that Walmart stepped up to the plate. They took full responsibility.”
Morgan says he loves comedy and looks forward to working again after a full recovery. “My goal is just to heal and get better because I’m not 100 percent yet… I’ll get back to making you laugh, I promise you.” This link is Morgan in continued dialog with Lauer on the Saturday Night Live stage.
