The leader of this team, Luke Cage, was based largely on Chester Himes’ Harlem Detective novels starring Coffin Ed and Gravedigger Jones. The art on the variant cover is similar to the original movie poster Cotton Comes To Harlem, a 1970 film directed by Ossie Davis and starring Calvin Lockhart, Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques.
