James Brown’s biopic “Get On Up” hits theaters today. In the spirit of FUNK, I wanted to share an interview I did with him for those who might want to hear the actual voice, of “The Godfather of Soul.” Then I figured, why not include three other masters, of the FUNK genre. Having the honor to speak with these men were not only a highlight of my career in music, but in life, as they provided the soundtrack to it (click on photo above for full view).
Here are four interviews with James Brown, Rick James, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins…
Although it was a phoner interview, despite the hiss, it was AWESOME to speak to the man that IS ‘THE’ pioneer of FUNK. The music you hear in the beginning is me on hold for his home office. We talked about his hits; his health and forthcoming record “Back Again.” Ladies and Gentlemen, James Brown…

After years of listening to his music and seeing him live in concert multiple times, this is actually my third interview with the man. The first was at the House of Blues in L.A. for his “comeback” show, after he was released from Folsom prison. The second time was a phoner. The one I treasure most, took place when he was promoting his last CD and tour, we talked about everything. I present to you, Rick James… 2X

During a period when he wasn’t promoting an album or a specific project, I was able to speak to him one-on-one in New York. It was a day after he had performed at a corporate event — it was an honor to kick it with George Clinton. We sat and chatted for awhile, as he spoke of Bill Clinton, Sly Stone, Motown, Michael Jackson, his visual art, and anything else that came to my mind, as I wanted to make the most of the time. Here’s some P-Funk with George…

After doing several audio interviews with Masters of Funk including those here, as well as Larry Graham, Roger Troutman, Cameo, the Ohio Players, and even getting a few questions in with Prince at a press conference — I was determined to not only interview him, but shoot it as well. When Bootsy Collins released his last CD, “Tha Funk Capital of the World,” I got to roll camera and not just tape… he gave me his definition of FUNK and spoke about learning “The One” from James Brown — “Ahhh the name is Bootsy Baby!…”
