Rest In Power Brother Prince Rogers Nelson… On April 21st last year when Prince passed away, the loss was felt around the world for days afterwards, as exemplified by these photos below:
“Jitney” is a triumph for the great playwright August Wilson, director Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the cast and Broadway! It opened this past Thursday and features a brilliant ensemble cast.
The 58th Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on Monday, February 15, 2016 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. A couple months ago, I wrote about a few artists I believed were worthy of recognition, and they’re all among the artists nominated…
Liken to my PSA blogs, “Evergreen Funky Clips,” will be videos regarding aspects of society that are Funked Up. Best case scenario, a new day will dawn, however considering we have to address these issues… Unfortunately despite the realization, while some issues will ideally cease to exist, little to nothing will be done about most of these atrocities.
“It Comes in Threes” is a phrase you’ll hear, usually by way, of unfortunate circumstances. Nothing could have prepared me for the recent tragic events that I’ve experienced. Two people that I had the fortune to work with, and one that I have been inspired by, passed on within three days of each other.
On the day after Eric Holder announces the results of the Federal Investigation on Ferguson… Shonda Rhimes incorporates the essence of current events on “Scandal,” presenting the horror of the Michael Brown case and addressing the issue of “illegal immigrants”, via “Olivia Pope” ala Kerry Washington.
According to CBS’s website: 25-time Grammy Award winner Stevie Wonder will be honored in a star-studded musical primetime special “Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key Of Life — An All-Star GRAMMY Salute.” It airs on CBS next Monday, February 16th at 9pm/8pm central.
Let’s reminisce a little… I’m an O.G. (older gentleman) and as I recollect, I remember the 70s being my favorite decade, and I will tell you why. The music, the club scene, the dances, and so on – and I could just go on, and on. Why this particular time, rather than some others was more enjoyable to me personally, is easy to explain.
Greetings Friends, Funk-A-Teers and Lovers of R&B… Take a trip with me as we STEP INTO THE FUNK, acknowledging the genius of my musical hero and namesake, Stevie Wonder.
Prince is releasing not one, but 2 new albums this fall. Expected for release on September 30th, “Art Official Age,” is a solo project and “Plectrumelectrum,” is the long anticipated project that features 3rdEyeGirl. Friends and fans may already have seen the video for the previously released single, “Breakfast Can Wait,” which features Dave Chapelle on the cover art – if not, go here… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHbyNrGXpAA…
Liken to three men who believed in equality, peace and respect for human life, three men brought joy, comic relief and hope to millions of people. Three men assassinated for being committed to their beliefs will forever have their place in history, for living up to a standard that they believed everybody deserved.
I’m always impressed when intellect and wealth meet humanity. The initiatives and efforts of Bill and Melinda Gates in the realms of education, health, hunger and global economics are astounding. Oprah Winfrey’s school in Africa for girls; how she’s put young men through college here in the United States; and her “Legends Ball” where she honored Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou and Ruby Dee, among others, before they left this earth will forever amaze me.
Recently my friend Gary Harris, who happens to be a former EMI A&R exec, has been criticized and bashed by several fans and other outlets on the web. One who introduced me to the music of D’Angelo back in 1992 prior to it’s release while I was at WBLS, he wrote an open letter to the artist, expressing a personal point of view.
The year is half-way over as summer is upon us. The first five months flew by to me, but since 2012, my thinking has been that 2013 & 14 are merely set-up and transitional for 2015. I don’t even know why I’ve thought that way, “it’s just a feeling I’ve got.” I personally moved to Boston this year and graduated from college last year, so perhaps it was just the transitions of my life that I foresaw.
There’s a lot of new music out there! Now, all new music isn’t necessarily good or FUNKY, but here’s some that is… acknowledging “Ladies First”, out of the world of hip-hop, is Amethyst Amelia Kelly, better known by her stage name Iggy Azalea. An Australian recording artist and model from Mullumbimby, New South Wales, she’s got “It.”
I believe the best Valentine’s Day gift is not the giving of cards and chocolates, but expressions of communication and clear thoughts. Like every year since we’ve been together, that was the exchange of gifts that my wife and I shared yesterday.
I never heard an R&B duet that I didn’t like. Over the years there have been hundreds of performances, but the R&B duo as a musical entity, has been limited. Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton are the male and female who have done it right most recently with the song “So In Love,” from Scott’s CD “The Light of the Sun.” This was a track that no true program director in the genre of Urban music could deny — they did the damn thing.
When I first saw a poster for Stephen King’s new book “Joyland” in the subways of New York, I said, ‘Is that a new movie?,’ because of how bold the colors were and the way it’s advertised. One quickly realizes it’s a poster for his new book at second glance, but it immediately made me wonder — will it be a movie? A reader of his works and one who’s enjoyed most of the films adapted from his books, I had to investigate.
Who’s Hot in Hip-Hop? Where’s Real Hip-Hop At? Questions those seeking always hear and will pose from time to time. It’s ALIVE and doing just fine. While there’s only some that appeals to me, ALL of it never did. There’s “rappers” out there that want to dis MCs for combining singing with rap, when rap is what R&B is today. I enjoy both, those that give it to me straight and those that flow with a melody.
THIS IS AN “OPEN LETTER” TO MY FAVORITE HIP-HOP PRODUCER DR. DRE. WARNING: This Blog May Contain Language Not Suitable for Small Children and Is Only for Those Who Really Love the Music of Dr. Dre. It’s not for the meek or easily offended at the rant of a hip-hop advocate and enthusiast. That said, it’s simply metaphysically time for new music from Dre. If you agree with me, I need you to prove it, I need you to tweet, share, e-mail, and get on the phone so this message goes viral. If you’re not down with that, stop here, this blog’s not for you.
